The QuIC Plenary Meeting, co-organized by AMETIC, strengthens the opportunities for the European quantum community

Chair, Executive Committee Okada gave a presentation on Q-STAR’s efforts at The QuIC Plenary Meeting. Both Q-STAR and QuIC join the ICQIA with other two members.

The QuiC plenary meeting was a great success, bringing together 120 participants who are representatives of the largest pan-European quantum companies and research organizations.

During the welcome speech, Carme Artigas, Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence, announced that “Spain will host the first quantum computer in southern Europe, and it will be 100% developed by European companies and with European components.”

During the day, the “Spain Quantum Industry” report was presented ( prepared by AMETIC and sponsored by ICEX) summarizing the state of the Spanish quantum computing ecosystem.

Madrid, May 24^th, 2023. The QuIC Plenary Meeting, co-organized by AMETIC and held at the EY headquarters in Madrid, was a resounding success, bringing together the largest community of pan-European quantum companies and research organizations. With over 120 participants, the event served as an essential gathering for members to meet European and global leaders, get informed about recent association activities, and network.

The meeting featured a distinguished list of speakers, including Carme Artigas, Secretary of State for Digitization and Artificial Intelligence from the Spanish Government; Lina Gálvez Muñoz, Member of the European Parliament; Gustav Kalbe, Acting Director of DG Connect C “Digital Excellence and Science Infrastructure” from the European Commission; Shunsuke Okada, President and CEO of Toshiba Digital Solutions as representative of Q-STAR; Daniel Opalka, Program Officer – Research and Innovation from EuroHPC Joint Undertaking; Ulises Arranz Cuéllar, GI Quantum Computing Advisor from EY and Jaime Gómez, Representative at the EU Quantum Industry Consortium, QuIC.

Carme Artigas, Secretary of State for Digitalization and Artificial Intelligence from the Spanish Government affirmed during her speech: “Spain is making a very ambitious and exciting commitment to the quantum industry as a driver of progress.” She added, “Quantum Spain was born with a clear objective: to make Spain the quantum hub of Southern Europe.” Artigas emphasized, “Through public-private cooperation, we are working to create a competitive quantum computing ecosystem for AI.” The Secretary of State concluded her welcome remarks with an important announcement: “Spain will be hosting the first quantum computer in southern Europe, and it will be 100% developed by European companies and with European components.”

MEP Lina Gálvez Muñoz, in her role as the shadow rapporteur of the Chips Joint Undertaking, highlighted crucial aspects of the recently unveiled European Chips Act and its links with the quantum industry. She emphasized the significant contributions made by QuIC during the European Parliament’s Science and Technology Options Assessment (STOA) panel, leading up to the enactment of the European Chips Act. She also underlined that Europe’s quantum industry is positioned to play a central role in the EU’s technological leadership.

The event included representatives from Q-STAR, who played a fundamental role alongside QuIC and other key actors in establishing the International Council of Quantum Industry Associations, by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to promote equity and reciprocity in the advancement of the international quantum ecosystem, enabling the discussion of areas of common interests, such as international standards, intellectual property, and access to funding.

At the end of the first day, the “Spain Quantum Industry” report, prepared by AMETIC and sponsored by ICEX, was presented, summarizing the state of the Spanish quantum computing ecosystem, which is available through this link.

The second day of the event held engaging presentations from 11 work groups and expert groups, including those on standardization, intellectual property and trade, and SME growth and funding.
