[Q2B Tokyo 2025 Report] Q-STAR Discusses the Future of Quantum Technology

Q-STAR Activity Introduction and Message to the Industry

On the first day, Executive Committee Chairman Okada gave a presentation titled "Japan's Future Strategy Envisioned in the Quantum Industry." In it, he explained how Japan can contribute through the quantum revolution and the establishment of its value chain, leveraging its business foundation supported by Japanese technological prowess and manufacturing. He specifically highlighted Q-STAR's initiatives, including collaboration with diverse member organizations, the creation of real-world use cases, and human resource development. Furthermore, he emphasized the importance of international partnerships and demonstrated a commitment to building a global collaborative framework.

As a kickoff message on the second day, Representative Director Shimada delivered a lecture titled "Creating Quantum Markets and Ecosystems," in which he discussed the potential of quantum technology to impact society, the economy, and the environment. He emphasized the importance for Japan to integrate quantum technology across society, linking it to industrial growth and the resolution of societal challenges. He also expressed Q-STAR's determination to strengthen global collaboration and contribute to the widespread adoption of quantum technology.

Q-STAR aims to strengthen its collaboration with quantum-related organizations both domestically and internationally for the advancement and social implementation of quantum technology, and thereby contribute to societal progress.

Representative Director Shimada's lecture concluded with an impassioned message: "The heart of the quantum industry is right here in Tokyo."

Representative Director Shimada was joined by Yuichiro Matsushita (Representative Director and CEO, President and Executive Officer, Quemix Inc.) and Toshiyuki Nakadoi (Director and COO, Executive Vice President, Quemix Inc.) to discuss the future of international collaboration and industrial application of quantum technology.

Representative Director Shimada spoke about the progress of quantum technology's social implementation in Japan and the importance of collaboration between industry and academia. He particularly emphasized that the competition surrounding quantum technology is not a closed technological race, but rather that breakthroughs can only be achieved through open international cooperation, and advocated for the necessity of international collaboration.

In this session, the development status of quantum technology in companies, challenges towards practical application, and expectations for the Japanese market were presented. The necessity of fostering quantum talent and building an international ecosystem was also reaffirmed. The understanding that nurturing young researchers and engineers directly contributes to the future competitiveness of the quantum industry was shared, and a clear direction for future cooperation was outlined.

Furthermore, Representative Director Shimada, in addition to Q-STAR's international collaboration through ICQIA, also mentioned the MoU (Memorandum of Understanding) signed with UKQuantum in April 2025, stating, "By building a robust and open cooperative framework, we can accelerate the social implementation of quantum technology." On behalf of Japan's quantum industry, he called for collaboration with governments and the international community. He also analyzed that Japan has strengths in materials, measurement, and manufacturing for industrial applications of quantum technology, and stated that actively participating in global standard-setting by leveraging these advantages would be a growth strategy for Japanese companies themselves. Moreover, he outlined a vision for Q-STAR to collaborate with international consortia to promote "testbeds" and "joint development of use cases" in cooperation with G-QuAT, and to advance standardization activities and human resource exchange.

This statement demonstrated Japan's strong will to exercise international leadership in quantum technology and to forge the future of industry and society through open cooperation.
